Students of the Plant Protection Study Program, Department of Plant Protection (HPT), Universitas Gadjah Mada, enrolled in the course Biotechnology for Plant Protection taught by Prof. Dr. Ir. Y. Andi Trisyono, M.Sc., had the opportunity to attend a guest lecture on May 5. The event was conducted in a hybrid format using the Zoom platform.
The guest lecture featured an international speaker, Mr. Michael Leader from Bayer Australia, who shared insights on the application of biotechnology in plant protection at a global level. The material presented covered the latest technological developments as well as challenges in sustainable pest and disease management.
Students demonstrated high enthusiasm throughout the session, as reflected in their active participation during the discussion and Q&A segment. Numerous critical questions were raised regarding the topics presented, creating a dynamic interaction between the students and the speaker, and making the lecture both engaging and beneficial.
This activity is expected to broaden students’ perspectives and enhance their understanding of the role of biotechnology in supporting effective and environmentally friendly plant protection.
The guest lecture activity in the Biotechnology for Plant Protection course also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 4 (Quality Education). Through the application of biotechnology and exposure to global industry insights, students gain knowledge to improve agricultural productivity sustainably while developing academic competencies relevant to real-world needs.
