Yogyakarta, September 9, 2026 – Proud news has arrived from the Indonesian Plant Protection Journal (JPTI). The scientific journal managed by the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases (HPT), Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), has been officially recognized as indexed by Scopus, an achievement that marks a significant milestone in JPTI’s journey as a platform for scientific publications in the field of plant protection.
As a token of gratitude for this achievement, the JPTI Team held a thanksgiving event on Wednesday (September 9, 2026), from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. The event took place at the Digital Library, Building A2a, 3rd Floor, Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, UGM, and was attended by Prof. Subejo, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., all lecturers from the Department of Plant Protection, the JPTI editorial team, and Prof. Dr. Ir. Susamto Somowiyarjo, M.Sc. as one of the senior figures in JPTI’s history.
The thanksgiving ceremony included the cutting of a tumpeng (rice cone), the distribution of refreshments, and a friendly gathering. The thanksgiving atmosphere also served as a moment to appreciate the contributions of various parties involved in the development and management of JPTI, leading to its achievement of international recognition.
On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Ir. Susamto Somowiyarjo, M.Sc., also shared his reflections on JPTI’s journey. According to documented history, JPTI was the result of the separation of the Agricultural Science Magazine (MIP), which at one time served as a scientific journal within the Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University (UGM). MIP began publication around the 1970s as an irregular, anthology-style publication.
At the initiative of the then Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tumari Jatileksono, M.A., M.Sc., MIP was then split into several journals, one of which was JPTI, managed by the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases. During its early management, the position of Chief Editor of JPTI was held by Prof. Dr. The JPTI Editorial Board is currently chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Y. Andi Trisyono, M.Sc.
JPTI’s journey has continued to grow. The journal received its first accreditation from the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in 1998. Over time, articles published in JPTI have been utilized by lecturers, both within and outside the Department of Higher Education, as references for academic promotion.
Now, after this long journey, JPTI has been recognized as a Scopus-indexed journal. This achievement is a significant milestone in JPTI’s development and serves as a gift for the 80th anniversary of the Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University.
In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Ir. Susamto Somowiyarjo, M.Sc., congratulated all those who have contributed to JPTI’s journey. He also expressed his gratitude and appreciation for JPTI’s achievements, which have now achieved international recognition.
“I was born with enthusiasm, and three years later, I immediately received accreditation. Now, JPTI is almost 30 years old. Yes, this is a small gift for the Dean. I also didn’t expect it to be indexed internationally.”
According to him, JPTI’s achievements are inseparable from the enthusiasm and togetherness of the Department of Agricultural Technology’s academic community, as well as the support of the department’s administrators and the leadership of the Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University. This is also reflected in JPTI’s history of development, which places collaboration between various parties as a vital part of the journal’s journey to international recognition.
Furthermore, Prof. Susamto emphasized the importance of developing journals as scientific products that meet the needs of their readers. He believes that journal managers need to develop marketable products that meet consumer needs, not simply market products that can be developed.
“Develop products (scientific journals) that can be marketed according to consumer needs, don’t market products that can be developed.”
This message serves as a reflection for JPTI managers to continuously maintain quality and develop journals to remain relevant to the needs of the scientific community and developments in the field of plant protection. Achieving Scopus indexing marks a new milestone for JPTI as it continues to develop as a scientific journal in the field of plant protection. This success also carries with it a responsibility to maintain the quality of its publications and expand JPTI’s contributions to the scientific community. In line with its history, JPTI is expected to continue to benefit the plant protection community, both within the Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and beyond.
This thanksgiving ceremony not only celebrated the achievement of Scopus indexing but also served as a moment to commemorate JPTI’s long journey, appreciate all those who have contributed, and assist in the development of the journal.
